Ōtautahi welcomes athletes for 2025 Special Olympics

Christchurch is set to welcome the 2025 Special Olympics National Summer Games, the country’s flagship four-yearly sporting event for athletes with a learning disability.

More than 1,200 athletes from across New Zealand, along with thousands of family members, support crew, and volunteers, are expected to fill the city’s sports facilities.

The Games will take place across six venues:

  • Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre (basketball and swimming)
  • Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub (athletics, bocce, football and powerlifting)
  • Harewood Golf Course
  • Zone Bowling Garden City
  • Equestrian Centre Arena
  • Canterbury Indoor Bowls Centre

When: Wednesday 10 December to Sunday 14 December

Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger says he is excited to welcome the Games. “This will be the first major sports event across multiple venues to be held in Christchurch for over a decade,” he says.
