Activities on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

On 3 December, our members around the country attended all sort of events and distributed wristbands, produced by the Human Rights Commission, featuring this year’s International Day theme of “Inclusion Matters”.

Among these events, Auckland members joined an orange-themed morning tea at Middlemore Hospital that was followed by an interactive visual arts session exploring inclusion. And, DPA Tairawhiti, celebrated by teaming up with CCS Disability Action and holding a free sausage sizzle, outside The Warehouse.  They handed out DPA flyers, pens and key rings along with the wristbands.

There will also be celebrations this weekend.  DPA Christchurch  will be having a christmas function on Saturday to celebrate the day and DPA Tairawhiti are holding a Hollywood Glitz & Glamour Ball tomorrow night.

Of course the day is being observed in lots of ways by other organisations. Among these is the release today of an anthem for the Kiwi athletes and supporters on the road to the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Called Long White Cloud you can download the video and song here

The observance of the day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and the well-being of persons with disabilities.
