Christchurch City Council Amyes Road Street Renewal

To: Christchurch City Council
Date: June 2025

Purpose

This submission’s purpose is to provide specific recommendations to the Christchurch City Council for improving the accessibility of Amyes Road during its renewal, ensuring it accommodates disabled people and other street users.

Summary of DPA submission

DPA provided feedback to Christchurch City Council on the Amyes Road Street Renewal, acknowledging existing good footpath widths while advocating for further improvements. They recommended the installation of mobility drop kerbs and tactile strips at key intersections to assist wheelchair users, those with mobility aids, and blind or low-vision people in navigating the area.

Key Recommendation:

DPA recommends the implementation of comprehensive accessibility improvements throughout the Amyes Road renewal project to ensure the street is navigable and safe for all users, particularly disabled people.

Supporting Statement 1:

DPA recommends that footpaths along Amyes Road are of sufficient width to enable pedestrians to easily pass one another, including people using wheelchairs or mobility devices.

Supporting Statement 2:

DPA asks for the installation of mobility drop kerbs at key intersections (Amyes Road and Tower, Branston, Whitam, Trevor, and Springs Streets) and tactile strips, which will enable wheelchair and mobility aid users, as well as blind and low vision people, to navigate these areas more easily.
