South Dunedin School Safety Improvements Parking Changes

To: Dunedin City Council
Date: August 2026

Purpose

The purpose of the submission was to support changes recommended by the Dunedin City Council (DCC) to parking and pedestrian access near South Dunedin schools.
DPA welcomed the inclusion of new raised pedestrian crossings, traffic islands, zebra crossings and buildouts at points closest to the main schools serving the suburb - Kings High School, Queens High School, and Bathgate Park School.

Summary of DPA submission

DPA strongly urged that the DCC strike a balance between the need to improve pedestrian safety in the area while providing sufficient parking spaces.

DPA recommended that a stocktake of mobility parking in each of the streets slated for change is undertaken prior to the commencement of any work.

DPA recommended that more car parks in the area are made 5- or 10-minute parks to ensure that there are sufficient spaces to pick up and drop off people, especially school children.
